Get Ready/Get Involved

Prepare

Know what disasters and hazards could affect your area, how to get emergency alerts, and where you and your family would go if you need to evacuate.

Make sure your family has a plan and practices it regularly. In the case of an emergency, gathering supplies for a Stay Box and Go Bag can help you stay safe and comfortable.

For help organizing your personal preparedness kit, visit the Ready America site. UCSF employees are eligible for a 25% DISCOUNT on any products in Ready America’s online store.

NERT/CERT Program

Learn how to do good in the neighborhood during a disaster by joining a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT).

For more details and resources

The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program educates volunteers about disaster preparedness for the hazards that may occur where they live. CERT programs nationwide train volunteers and organizations that professional responders can rely on during disasters, allowing them to focus on more complex tasks.

CERT trains volunteers in basic disaster response skills, such as:

  • Fire safety
  • Light search and rescue
  • Team organization
  • Disaster medical operations

These programs are a great opportunity to learn basic response skills and make a difference.

To participate in the San Francisco Fire Department’s local program, visit SF Fire NERT.

Outside of San Francisco, contact your local jurisdiction for more information on CERT training, or visit the California Governor's Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) CERT website at https://www.caloes.ca.gov/office-of-the-director/operations/planning-preparedness-prevention/community-emergency-response-team/ for more information.
