Drop! Cover! Hold On!

Save the date! The Great ShakeOut will be on October 16, 2025, at 10:16 AM (local time).

Once again, UCSF will join millions worldwide in participating in the Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drill. We encourage the entire UCSF community to take this opportunity to help us keep our patients, staff, faculty, students, and community prepared and safe during and after an earthquake.

UCSF community members who submit the Great ShakeOut Drill Evaluation Form online will be entered into a drawing for a coffee shop gift card on us!

How Can You Take Part?

It's easy! UCSF Enterprise Emergency Management will activate its emergency mass notification system during the drill by sending a WarnMe message to the UCSF community. Security Overhead Announcements will be made in hospital settings. Please take a moment to update your emergency contact information in WarnMe and add your cell phone number.

  • Reply with "YES" to the text WarnMe message to confirm recipient of the alert.
  • Wherever you are, practice "Drop, Cover, and Hold On" for at least one minute.
    • ✔️ DROP to the ground (before the earthquake drops you!).
    • ✔️ COVER your head and neck with your arms and seek additional shelter by getting under a sturdy desk or table if nearby.
    • ✔️ HOLD ON to your shelter and be prepared to move with it until the shaking stops.
  • Review the UCSF Emergency Operations plan, earthquake safety, and preparedness plans at work, school, and home.
  • Locate and review Emergency Action Plans (EAPs) or Departmental Emergency Action Plans (DEAPs).
  • Test emergency communication methods.
  • Complete Department Emergency Checklists and Status Reports.
  • Fill out a Great ShakeOut Drill Evaluation Form to be entered into a coffee shop gift card drawing!

WarnMe

WarnMe is UCSF’s alerting and warning service for those with official UCSF IDs. Developed in the aftermath of the Virginia Tech tragedy, WarnMe is activated when there is an immediate threat to safety or health affecting the campus community. Alerts can be sent via text message, phone call or email. Text messages have been shown to be the most effective in a disaster scenario.

How to Setup WarnMe and How it Works

Enter content. To receive alerts through means other than your official UCSF e-mail address or phone number, you may register up to six other contact sources and devices.

WarnMe is used only for:

• Life-threatening situations;
• Providing brief updates on an emergency as it’s happening;
• Instructing where to receive aid in the aftermath of an event such as an earthquake;
• Occasional drills – clearly defined as such – conducted to test and ensure the effectiveness of the system;
• All-clear notices for certain trained members of the UCSF community, such as floor wardens.

Information is strictly confidential and will not be sold or shared with any other public or private entity. WarnMe is part of the campus' emergency communications system. In all emergencies, natural disasters and other crises, information will be recorded on the campus emergency hotline number, 415-502-4000 (or 2-4000 in-house), or posted on the campus Web site as quickly as possible.

WarnMe registration uses MyAccess for authentication.
